Tunisia's date exports have reached a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion dinars for the first time during the 2025/2026 season. According to the Tunisian Broadcasting and Television Establishment, the total value of date exports was over 1,000 million dinars, up from approximately 830 million dinars in the previous season. This development reflects the growing importance of the date sector within Tunisia's agricultural export system.
The quantity of dates exported also saw a notable increase, rising to around 160,000 tons from 125,000 tons in the 2024/2025 season. This growth demonstrates the dynamic nature of the sector in terms of production, collection, marketing, and export. The Tunisian Date Producers' Association has played a crucial role in promoting Tunisian dates and highlighting their quality and characteristics, particularly the "Deglet Noor" variety.
The association has intensified its efforts to explore new markets and diversify export destinations. As a result, the list of countries receiving Tunisian dates has expanded, with exports no longer limited to traditional markets. Notable increases were recorded in exports to Germany, which rose from around 10,000 tons to 16,000 tons, and to Italy, which reached approximately 19,000 tons.
France also saw significant exports, with nearly 14,000 tons of dates shipped. The growth in date exports is not limited to traditional markets, with Tunisia also making inroads into new markets, particularly in Asia and the Americas. India received around 6,000 tons of dates, while the United States imported nearly 6,000 tons, and Turkey and Malaysia received 7,000 tons and 5,000 tons, respectively.
The diversity of export destinations is a key indicator of the expanding presence of Tunisian dates globally. New markets, including Estonia, Cambodia, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, Jordan, and Belarus, have emerged as significant recipients of Tunisian dates. This geographic diversification reflects the efforts made to explore promising markets and introduce Tunisian products to new importers and traders.
The results achieved during the 2025/2026 season underscore the importance of continued efforts to promote Tunisian dates, expand the base of export markets, and explore new destinations. The growth in date exports also highlights the need for sustained investment in quality, promotion, and innovation to enhance the value-added of Tunisian dates and solidify their position as a leading agricultural export product.
The Tunisian date sector's future prospects appear promising, with the country's date exports poised to continue their upward trend. As the sector continues to evolve, it is likely that Tunisian dates will maintain their position as a sought-after product in the global market, driven by their quality, diversity, and the efforts of industry stakeholders to promote and develop the sector.
