Tunisia's date exports have achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion dinars in value for the first time during the 2025-2026 season. According to data from Diwan FM, the total value of date exports reached over 1,000 million dinars, up from approximately 830 million dinars in the previous season. This growth reflects the increasing importance of the date sector within Tunisia's agricultural export system.
The quantity of dates exported also saw a notable increase, rising to around 160,000 tons from 125,000 tons in the 2024-2025 season. This uptick demonstrates the dynamic nature of the sector in terms of production, collection, marketing, and export. The Tunisian Date Association has played a crucial role in promoting Tunisian dates and highlighting their quality and characteristics, particularly the "Deglet Noor" variety.
The association's efforts have focused on finding new markets and diversifying export destinations. As a result, the list of countries receiving Tunisian dates has expanded, with exports no longer limited to traditional markets. Germany, Italy, and France remain key destinations, with exports to these countries increasing significantly. For instance, date exports to Germany rose from around 10,000 tons to nearly 16,000 tons.
In addition to traditional markets, Tunisian date exports are also expanding to new destinations, particularly in Asia and the Americas. The value of exports to India reached around 6,000 tons, while the United States received approximately 6,000 tons. Turkey, Malaysia, and other countries also feature on the list of importers, demonstrating the growing global presence of Tunisian dates.
The geographic diversity of Tunisian date exports is a significant indicator of their growing global presence. New markets, including Estonia, Cambodia, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, Jordan, and Belarus, have emerged as destinations for Tunisian dates. This expansion reflects the ongoing efforts to explore promising markets and introduce Tunisian products to new importers and traders.
The results of the 2025-2026 season underscore the importance of continued efforts to promote Tunisian dates, expand the market base, and explore new destinations. The growth in date exports also highlights the need for sustained investment in quality, promotion, and innovation to enhance the value-added of Tunisian dates and solidify their position as a leading agricultural export product.
As Tunisia's date exports surpass the 1 billion dinar mark for the first time, the sector is poised for further growth and development. The Tunisian Date Association and other stakeholders will likely focus on building on this momentum, exploring new markets, and reinforcing the country's position as a major player in the global date market.
