The trade exchange between Tunisia and Algeria has witnessed a significant surge, rising by 166% over the past five years to reach approximately $2.76 billion. According to recent data from the Algerian Export Promotion Center, this growth has elevated Algeria to the seventh position among Tunisia's global trading partners and fourth among its suppliers. This development was highlighted during a meeting between businessmen and representatives of professional organizations from both countries in Algeria.
The meeting, which took place from September 22 to 24, 2026, was organized by the "Connect International" organization in partnership with the Algerian Confederation of Citizen Employers. The gathering aimed to explore ways to enhance economic and commercial cooperation and discover new opportunities for partnership and investment between the two nations. The event underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral ties in various sectors.
A notable aspect of the trade exchange between Tunisia and Algeria is the composition of Tunisian exports to Algeria, with mechanical and electrical industries accounting for 56.53% of the total. The chemical industry follows with 31.53%, and agricultural and food products make up 7.05%. These sectors are pivotal in driving the growth of bilateral trade and offer potential for further expansion.
On the investment front, 43 Tunisian companies are currently active in Algeria, with the mechanical and electrical sectors accounting for 30% of these investments. The services sector constitutes 23%, while the textile and agricultural sectors each account for 16%. These investments not only contribute to the economic cooperation between the two countries but also provide a foundation for future growth.
The trade between Tunisia and Algeria benefits from significant concessions, including customs reductions of up to 40% under the bilateral preferential trade agreement. Additionally, the countries' membership in the Greater Arab Free Trade Area provides for customs exemptions. These agreements facilitate trade and make it more economically viable for companies from both nations to engage in bilateral commerce.
To further enhance cooperation, recommendations have been made to facilitate the import of automotive components and spare parts manufactured in Tunisia, in exchange for easing the entry of assembled and ready-to-use vehicles from Algeria. There is also a call to develop infrastructure at border crossings and storage warehouses, and to expedite the establishment of free zones near the borders.
Experts believe that improving logistical coordination can support joint exports and leverage the Trans-Saharan Highway to access African markets. Strengthening economic ties between Tunisia and Algeria not only benefits both countries but also has the potential to foster broader regional cooperation and economic growth in the African continent.
