Long-distance truck drivers along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway have been cautioned against ferrying strangers and unauthorized passengers. This warning comes after several reports of insecurity on the busy highway, where some truck drivers have been attacked, mostly at night and early morning hours. The Northern Corridor Transit Authority officials met with truck drivers at Mtito Andei to discuss the safety of drivers and goods in transit.
The meeting was attended by the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit (NCTPU), a specialized branch of the Kenya Police Service created to protect transit cargo and truck drivers along the Northern Corridor. Truck drivers shared their experiences, with one driver, Andrew Murigu, stating that some drivers have been attacked by people they picked up on the road, unaware that they were robbers.
The Transport Workers Union (TAWU) had previously expressed concern over the alarming rise in cargo theft incidents along the Northern Corridor. The union stated that the menace poses a serious threat to the safety and security of truck drivers, exposes transporters and cargo owners to significant financial losses, and undermines Kenya's position as the preferred gateway for trade in the East African region.
TAWU demanded that the government strengthen funding, staffing, and logistical support for the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit. They also called for the deployment of rapid response units along identified high-risk zones, such as Mau Summit, and improved inter-agency coordination, command structure, and real-time intelligence sharing.
The union also requested the development of clear protocols for securing accident and breakdown scenes to prevent cargo thefts. This came after several incidents where cargo was stolen during accidents or breakdowns. The protocols aim to ensure that cargo is secure and that truck drivers are not vulnerable to attacks.

Truck drivers were advised to share information with authorities and report incidents promptly to facilitate police action. The influence of drugs while driving was also discussed, with drivers being warned against driving under the influence.
