According to a report by Alphaliner, a shipping research firm, the global container shipping industry has seen significant activity as of October 2026. The report highlights the top 4 container shipping companies worldwide. MSC has taken the lead, transporting approximately 5.5 million equivalent units, capturing 20% of the global container shipping market. This positions MSC as a dominant player in the industry.

Maersk, also known as the Danish Line, secured the second spot globally in container shipping during 2026, with 4.2 million containers shipped as of October. This represents 15% of the global container shipping market. The company's performance underscores its strong presence in the industry. The ranking is based on the number of containers shipped and the market share each company holds.

The third position is held by CMA CGM, a French shipping line, which accounted for 13% of the global container shipping market with 3.5 million containers. Cosco, a Chinese shipping line, ranks fourth, having transported 3 million containers as of October 2026, representing 11% of the global market. These rankings reflect the competitive landscape of the global container shipping industry.

The Alphaliner report also notes that competition in the industry is no longer solely based on the size of the fleet. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of operational efficiency, network expansion, and the ability to provide integrated services across the supply chain. This shift in focus indicates a more complex and multifaceted industry.

In related news, Sea-Intelligence, a shipping research firm, released its 181st issue of the Global Liner Performance (GLP) report. The report includes data on shipping schedule reliability up to August 2026. The findings indicate that global schedule reliability has declined sharply due to severe congestion in Asian ports. This decline reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the shipping industry.

The Sea-Intelligence report also highlights that the average delay for late-arriving ships decreased, but still reached 6.81 days, the highest level since March 2022. On an annual basis, the delay increased by 1.92 days. These statistics provide insight into the operational challenges faced by shipping companies.

In terms of schedule reliability, Maersk topped the list of 13 major shipping companies in August 2026, with a reliability rate of 67.3%. MSC and CMA CGM followed with rates of 55.2% and 50.6%, respectively. These rankings reflect the varying levels of performance among major shipping companies.
