A new project aimed at collecting, sorting, and valorizing household waste was launched on September 30 in Ahépé Apédomé, in the Yoto 2 commune of Togo. The initiative is a partnership between the Yoto 2 commune and the NGO "Moi Jeu Tri". The project's primary objective is to contribute sustainably to household sanitation and waste valorization in the commune. This project also aims to create jobs for young people and women.
The launch event included the distribution of collection and sorting kits, such as trash cans, tricycles, gloves, and masks, to the community. A sketch highlighting the importance of household waste collection and valorization was also presented. As part of this project, each household will receive a trash can to enable waste sorting at source. An operational team of six young people will be responsible for collecting waste using tricycles.
The team will visit households twice a week to collect pre-sorted waste. The collected waste will then be transported to a designated site where it will be sorted and valorized. Organic waste will be transformed into compost, reducing the amount of waste abandoned in nature and promoting sustainable waste management. The project's implementation will help improve the overall cleanliness of the commune.
The project also provides for a financial contribution from households, which will be used to cover the maintenance costs of the tricycles and the remuneration of the young people responsible for collection. The contribution will be determined based on the number of people in each household. This approach aims to ensure the project's sustainability and encourage community involvement.
During the launch event, Agouzé Kouma, deputy mayor of Yoto 2 commune, expressed his gratitude to the NGO "Moi Jeu Tri" for its support and called on beneficiaries to use the equipment provided responsibly to ensure the project's longevity. Djissénou Kodjo, a local deputy, encouraged the population to take ownership of the initiative and play their part in cleaning up their environment.
The project's implementation is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the local economy. By creating jobs for young people and women, the project will contribute to the commune's economic development. Additionally, the project's focus on waste valorization will help reduce the environmental impacts associated with waste disposal.
Agbétossou Parfait, country director of the NGO "Moi Jeu Tri", was present at the launch event. The project's success will depend on the collaboration and commitment of all stakeholders, including the local authorities, the NGO, and the community. With a well-planned and implemented project, Yoto 2 commune can serve as a model for sustainable waste management in Togo.
