The MedLeaders Association recently launched the 10th edition of the MLA Tour Rose in Lomé, Togo, a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting early detection. The event, themed "Detect Early, Save Lives: African Medical Youth United Against Breast Cancer," kicked off on October 2 with a press conference. The campaign will feature various activities, including outreach programs in neighborhoods, markets, schools, and different cities across the country.
The association's efforts focus on educating the public about risk factors, symptoms, and prevention methods, particularly self-examination of the breasts. The program includes a breast cancer screening campaign, with registrations taking place from October 5 to 15 and screening sessions scheduled from October 12 to 24. A scientific congress will also be held on October 15 and 16 in Lomé, featuring a blood donation drive at the National Blood Transfusion Center.
According to the representative of the Minister of Communication, Awanya Kossi, breast cancer remains a significant public health challenge. He emphasized the importance of early detection as a crucial means of ensuring prompt treatment. The chosen theme reflects the commitment of African youth and medical professionals to join forces in combating the disease.
Dr. Mathey Précilia, National Coordinator of MedLeaders Association, highlighted the alarming global statistics, with nearly 670,000 deaths attributed to breast cancer in 2022. She stressed that early detection can lead to effective treatment and that the association aims to make this 10th anniversary a significant call to action.
Dr. Fiagnon Huguette, a gynecologist-obstetrician and member of MedLeaders Association, cited a 2023 study indicating that breast cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage in Togo. The study found that all patients were diagnosed at stages III or IV, with approximately 70% at stage III and 30% at stage IV. These findings underscore the need for increased awareness and early utilization of healthcare services.
MedLeaders Association, present in Togo, Morocco, France, Germany, and Italy, is committed to continuing its prevention efforts against non-communicable diseases and mobilizing the public around breast cancer screening. The association's activities will culminate in a Rose Marathon on October 17 at the Lomé Omnisports Stadium, followed by a dinner celebrating its 10-year commitment.
The MLA Tour Rose campaign aims to engage the public and medical professionals in the fight against breast cancer. With its extensive outreach and educational programs, MedLeaders Association seeks to make a significant impact in Togo and beyond.
