Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, has expressed his full support for the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, aimed at combating corruption in Ghana. Speaking at the 2026 Asogli Te Za (Yam Festival) in Ho, he emphasized that corruption is the biggest stumbling block to national development. According to Togbe Afede, the consequences of corruption are painfully felt by all Ghanaians, and it is essential for citizens to support anti-graft efforts. He cited the economic desperation that drives some Ghanaians to seek opportunities abroad, often under unfavorable conditions.
The Agbogbomefia highlighted the pervasive nature of corruption in Ghana, citing a particularly egregious example of top government officials misusing State scholarships meant for the needy. He noted that some officials not only secured scholarships for themselves but also for their spouses and children, which he described as a disgrace. Togbe Afede expressed disappointment that some individuals defended these corrupt acts, underscoring the need for honesty and respect for truth in the fight against corruption.
Togbe Afede stressed that the support of all Ghanaians is crucial for anti-corruption agencies, including the Attorney-General and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), to effectively monitor, investigate, and prosecute economic crimes. He commended the government for its national development agenda, including the "Big Push" initiative, and praised the President for pursuing reparation justice for colonialism and slavery, describing him as "truly an African leader."
In addition to his support for anti-corruption efforts, Togbe Afede announced plans to strengthen and transform the Asogli traditional administration. The goal is to promote development with chiefs at the forefront, ensuring that traditional institutions play a vital role in Ghana's growth. This move is expected to enhance the effectiveness of traditional administrations and foster collaboration with the government.
Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, attended the event and praised the theme of the 2026 Asogli Te Za celebration, "United in Purpose, Investing in People and Infrastructure for Sustainable National Development." She noted that the theme aligns with the government's initiatives under President Mahama and emphasized the importance of unity in achieving national development.
Madam Gomashie drew parallels between the collective effort required to cultivate, harvest, and celebrate yam, and the collaborative approach needed for community and national development. She expressed her gratitude to Mr. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, for fostering unity between the government and the people of the Volta Region.
The event, which took place at the Jubilee Park in Ho, was well-attended by dignitaries and citizens alike. The Asogli Te Za celebration serves as a platform for promoting cultural heritage and national development, with this year's theme focusing on the importance of unity and collective effort in achieving sustainable growth.
