After six years of construction, the first section of Tizi-Ouzou's telephérique project is nearing completion and is expected to be operational in the first half of July. The project, which aims to ease traffic congestion in the city, has faced several delays but is now in its final stages. Samir Nait Youcef, Director of Transport for the wilaya, confirmed that the section connecting the wilaya to the Bouhinoune bus station will be ready for the month of July.
The first section, which spans 2.5 kilometers, will feature four stations and 65 cabins, with a capacity to transport 2,400 passengers per hour per line. The trials for the telephérique's functioning are currently underway and have been deemed successful. The tests involve checking the electrical energy, cabin movement, braking system, and motor function to identify any potential technical issues.
Nait Youcef explained that the trials are being conducted in phases, with five cabins initially tested, followed by 30 more. The tests have yielded positive results, and another series of trials is scheduled for next week. Meanwhile, work on the stations is progressing rapidly, with the Bouhinoune station nearing completion.
According to Nait Youcef, the work on the first section is almost finished, with a 96% completion rate at the station and 80% at the 1er novembre and new city stations. The remaining work involves minor finishing touches and exterior adjustments. The project has been plagued by delays, which Nait Youcef attributes to a lack of payment credits, opposition, and conflicts between companies.
The Director of Transport acknowledged that most of the constraints were resolved by the end of 2017, particularly those related to funding. The state has provided the necessary funds to complete the project, and measures have been taken to address issues with underperforming companies. The project was initially scheduled for completion in 2017 but has faced repeated delays.
The Tizi-Ouzou telephérique project, which spans 5.5 kilometers and features 28 pylons, was launched in 2013. The second section, which will connect the city to the Belloua hospital, is expected to be completed within a year. The project has cost 8.7 billion Algerian dinars and will provide an efficient transportation system for the city's residents.
The telephérique system will consist of three sections, with the first section connecting Bouhinoune to the wilaya, the second section linking the wilaya to the Belloua hospital, and the third section connecting the hospital to the Redjaouna village. The system will use a combination of telephériques and télécabines to transport passengers.
