President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youths to actively participate in the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the outcome will have significant implications for their future. Speaking during the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally in Rivers on Saturday, Tinubu urged the youths to shape the country's future through active participation in the electoral process.
Tinubu specifically addressed the youths at the rally, saying they had a responsibility to determine the direction of the country. "To the youth of Nigeria, I'm looking at you. This election is about you. It's not about me. Your future depends on this election," he said. He also urged those who had registered as voters but were yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to visit the appropriate collection centres.
The President described the voter card as an important instrument for determining the country's leadership, appealing to young Nigerians not to disregard the opportunity to participate in the electoral process. "It is left for you to use the weapon you have. And that weapon is the PVC. If you have not collected yours, please go ahead and collect it. Please. I beg you. I take God beg you," Tinubu said.
Tinubu also highlighted his administration's economic policies, arguing that economic development and the distribution of prosperity were essential to improving the living conditions of Nigerians, particularly young people. He maintained that his government was addressing outstanding financial obligations inherited from previous administrations, including unpaid pensions and gratuities owed to retirees.
According to Tinubu, billions and trillions of naira in pension and gratuity liabilities had accumulated before his administration assumed office, but efforts were being made to settle the outstanding payments. "The people that governed before, they left unpaid pensions and gratuity in billions and trillions of naira. That is being cleared. So that every family is included. We are sharing prosperity already," he said.
The President said the ongoing efforts to settle the liabilities were part of his administration's broader commitment to ensuring that more Nigerian families benefited from economic opportunities and government policies. He emphasized that his government was working to ensure that the benefits of economic growth were distributed equitably among all Nigerians.
Tinubu's call to action comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, which will provide Nigerians with the opportunity to choose their leaders. The President's emphasis on the importance of youth participation in the electoral process is seen as a crucial step towards ensuring that the country's future is shaped by the voices of its young people.
