Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has defended President Bola Tinubu's administration, citing the approval of a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers as evidence of concern for their welfare. In an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, Oshiomhole praised the government's performance and urged Nigerians to appreciate its policies. He highlighted the significance of the allowance, stating that it represents a 100% increase for workers currently earning ₦70,000.

The Federal Government approved the monthly ₦70,000 transport intervention for workers across all levels for six months, starting in November 2026, following a meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on October 27. The agreement also includes the payment of outstanding peculiar allowances in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November. However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) rejected the transport allowance, advocating for a permanent salary increase instead of temporary relief.

Oshiomhole criticised the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, under which Atiku Abubakar served as vice-president, alleging that it failed to guarantee the payment of workers' salaries. He contrasted this with Tinubu's efforts, crediting him with unifying the exchange rate. Oshiomhole also faulted Atiku, accusing him of allowing multiple exchange rates that favoured people based on their connections.

The senator also criticised Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), for allegedly failing to present an alternative to Tinubu's policies. Oshiomhole described Obi as a trader with a short-term focus, whereas he characterised Tinubu as a statesman thinking of future generations.

While acknowledging the right of opposition candidates to contest the presidency, Oshiomhole argued that Tinubu should be allowed to continue in office after "having gone through all the teething problems" rather than "recruit a new apprentice." He expressed confidence in Tinubu's ability to lead the country, citing his experience and vision.

Oshiomhole's comments reflect his support for Tinubu's policies and his confidence in the president's leadership. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, Oshiomhole's endorsement of Tinubu is significant, given his influence as a senator and a former labour leader. The election will offer Nigerians a choice between Tinubu and other candidates, including Atiku and Peter Obi.

The ₦70,000 transport allowance has been a contentious issue, with some workers welcoming it as relief and others, like the TUC, advocating for a more permanent solution to the challenges facing workers. As the Tinubu administration continues to implement its policies, its performance will likely be closely scrutinised by Nigerians in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election.
