Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 presidential election. He made this statement in Akure, where hundreds of APC supporters greeted him. Adegbonmire dismissed the opposition as incapable of mounting a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He attributed this to internal disagreements within the opposition parties.
Adegbonmire, who is seeking re-election to the Senate, noted that disagreements after party primaries are normal in politics. He recalled that some members were aggrieved when he emerged as the party's senatorial candidate in the previous election. Despite this, he said the APC would work together in unity and ensure victory in the 2027 elections. Adegbonmire also dismissed reports of an alliance involving some APC members and the political coalition associated with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The senator described APC members' participation in such an arrangement as anti-party activity, saying he was not aware of any member of the ruling party who had openly declared an intention to work against the APC. Adegbonmire emphasized that the APC in Ondo remained firmly positioned ahead of the 2027 elections, dismissing the strength of opposition parties in the state. He noted that the party would work to resolve its internal disagreements and mobilize its members for the elections.
Adegbonmire also criticized the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, over his promise to restore the petrol subsidy if elected president. Atiku has repeatedly said he would restore the subsidy under his administration, arguing that Nigerians have not sufficiently benefited from the savings from its removal. Adegbonmire argued that returning to a subsidy would not address Nigeria's economic challenges.
Instead, Adegbonmire suggested that the focus should be on strengthening incomes, investment, and productive sectors. He defended the Tinubu administration's economic reforms, arguing that removing the petrol subsidy freed resources for government spending and helped eliminate fuel queues. Adegbonmire acknowledged that Nigerians were facing economic hardship as a result of the reforms but expressed confidence that the administration was trying to make Nigeria a better place.
The senator cited improvements in Nigeria's foreign reserves and the government's ability to undertake major infrastructure projects as evidence of the reforms' impact. He said the APC would continue to defend its record and mobilize Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections. Adegbonmire urged Nigerians not to go back to the "old dark days" and assured them that the APC was the answer.
