The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) in Morocco has issued a weather alert forecasting thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds in several provinces across the country. The alert warns of rainfall ranging from 20 to 30 millimeters in various regions. The provinces expected to be affected include Errachidia, Midelt, Boulemane, Guercif, Figuig, and Taourirt, where the weather conditions are expected to persist until 4 p.m.
The DGM has also predicted similar weather conditions in other provinces, including Ifrane, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Kelaat Sraghna, Tata, and Ouarzazate, where thunderstorms are expected to occur from noon to midnight. Additionally, Taroudant, Tinghir, Zagora, Khouribga, Settat, Essaouira, Marrakech, Rehamna, Youssoufia, Azilal, Beni Mellal, and Fquih Ben Salah are also expected to experience thunderstorms.
Morocco has been experiencing a change in temperature, with cooler weather reported in recent days compared to a few weeks ago. During that period, temperatures had reached as high as 29 degrees Celsius. Currently, weather applications forecast foggy conditions, with temperatures ranging between 19 and 25 degrees Celsius in Rabat.
The cooler weather is expected to continue until Monday, with temperatures forecast to rise to between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and remain at similar levels through Thursday. However, forecasts provided by weather applications remain unverified, as temperature predictions can change in accordance with weather conditions.
This weather alert comes after Morocco experienced one of its warmest summers in recent decades. Earlier this month, the DGM identified summer 2026 as the eighth warmest on record since 1981. Summer 2023 remains the hottest in the series, with an average temperature anomaly of 1.92 degrees Celsius.
The summer months of June, July, and August all recorded above-average temperatures. June ranked eighth among the hottest on record, with an anomaly of 0.97°C, while July ranked seventh at 1.37°C. August ranked 10th, with temperatures 0.89°C above the 1991–2020 average.
The Moroccan weather authorities have been monitoring the situation closely, and residents in the affected provinces are advised to take necessary precautions. The DGM will continue to provide updates on the weather conditions, and residents are urged to follow their forecasts and alerts.
