Three Western Cape teachers have taken first place in their respective categories at the 26th annual National Teaching Awards in Johannesburg. Mthobi Fihla of Phakamisani Primary School in Plettenberg Bay, Danielle Bosch of Koos Sadie Primary School in Goodwood, and Hortense Stegmann of Welgemoed Primary School were among 15 teachers who represented the Western Cape at the awards on October 1, 2026.

The National Teaching Awards recognise excellence among educators across South Africa. The Department of Basic Education says the 2026 awards comprise 15 categories. Western Cape Education Minister Jaco Londt congratulated the three national winners and the other provincial representatives. The awards ceremony was attended by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube and Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule.

Mthobi Fihla won Excellence in Inclusive Education Leadership. He highlighted the importance of inclusive education, stating that it prevents learners from being left behind and labelled due to their abilities. Fihla also emphasised that children should learn and achieve at their own pace. His award acknowledges his leadership in promoting inclusive education at Phakamisani Primary School.

Danielle Bosch was named the national winner in Excellence in Grade R Teaching. She stressed the importance of a well-planned routine and day programme in effective classroom management. Bosch's approach contributes to active participation in learning among her students. Her win recognises her innovative teaching methods at Koos Sadie Primary School.

Hortense Stegmann won Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning. Her award acknowledges her use of technology to enhance teaching and learning at Welgemoed Primary School. Stegmann's approach has likely improved student engagement and academic performance.

The awards were held under the theme “Uniting for Excellence, Elevating Achievement, Empowering Educators to shape South Africa’s Future”. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube addressed the ceremony, describing districts as places “where educational leadership becomes real”. The theme reflects the importance of collaboration and excellence in education.

The Western Cape Education Department has expressed pride in the achievements of the three teachers. Minister Jaco Londt's congratulations to the winners and other provincial representatives underscore the department's commitment to recognising and rewarding teaching excellence. The National Teaching Awards will continue to promote and celebrate outstanding educators across South Africa.
