The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspects, Hammed Akinbami, Akinbami Ojo, and Padonu Edward, for allegedly killing six members of a family during a robbery incident at Oloba Village in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State capital. According to the police, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime during interrogation. The incident occurred on September 22, 2026, at about 1900hrs.
The police said the suspects were armed with a locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses, and a club, which they used to carry out the attack. During the invasion, the suspects robbed the family of ₦200,000 cash, a Boxer motorcycle, a Doma machine with chainsaw, and a spraying machine. The attack turned fatal as the suspects tied two of the children by their hands and legs and threw them into a nearby river, while the remaining members of the family were killed and their bodies disposed of in the same river.
The Oyo Police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, stated that the suspects were arrested on October 2, 2026, at about 1700hrs, after police detectives acting on intelligence commenced an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible. Ayanlade added that the police visited the scene, where photographs were taken and several exhibits were recovered, including the Boxer motorcycle belonging to the murdered family, one locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses, and the club used during the attack.
According to Ayanlade, during the attack, Hammed Akinbami shot the husband, Ifeanyi Chukwu, while Akinbami Ojo and Padonu Edward inflicted injuries on the wife by hitting her on the head. The police spokesperson said the remains of the wife have since been recovered, while concerted efforts are ongoing to recover the remains of the four other victims, all members of the same family, who were dumped in the river.
The Oyo State Police Command has transferred the suspects and case file to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigation and necessary legal action. The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed a thorough investigation into the case, with a view to ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.
