A joint operation between the Durban Metro Police Service Highway Patrol, Crime Intelligence, and Durban Central SAPS led to the arrest of three suspects linked to a string of business robberies in Durban. The arrests were made on Saturday, September 19, after a high-speed chase through the Durban CBD. The suspects were allegedly driving a vehicle linked to the robberies when police attempted to stop them.
According to Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, police received information about a vehicle allegedly linked to business robberies travelling towards the City Centre. When members spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it, the suspects allegedly sped away, triggering a high-speed pursuit. The suspects drove through red traffic lights and navigated the streets dangerously, placing other road users at risk.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at police. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed into two civilian vehicles near the intersection of King Dinuzulu Road and South Ridge Road. One suspect was found hiding inside the crashed vehicle, while the other two allegedly fled on foot. Police gave chase and apprehended the two suspects.
A 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, a magazine, and one live round of ammunition were recovered from the scene. The suspects face charges including possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, reckless and negligent driving, and failing to stop when instructed by police.
Colonel Zungu stated that the three suspects were also being linked to three business robberies committed in Durban Central and Mayville. The joint operation was successful in disrupting the suspects' activities and bringing them to justice. The police are continuing with their investigations to gather more evidence.
The high-speed chase caused concern among road users, who were placed at risk by the suspects' reckless driving. The police have been praised for their swift action in apprehending the suspects and preventing further harm to the public. The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
