Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, was arrested by federal agents in Florida on Friday and charged with possessing child sexual abuse material. According to the FBI, Markle was apprehended at a senior care facility in Polk County early Friday and made a brief appearance in federal court in Tampa later that day. The arrest was made after a federal criminal complaint outlined that agents seized around 78 items from two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented for nearly 20 years.
The seized items allegedly include sexually explicit photographs of Markle with underage girls. A federal criminal complaint includes an affidavit stating that two images in the units depicted a man identified by a witness as Markle with a nude minor. The seized materials reportedly consist of slides, photographs, film negatives, and books containing illegal content. The FBI is currently reviewing the evidence to determine the full extent of the charges.
Kash Patel, director of the FBI, remarked that Mr Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions. He added that the FBI would thoroughly pursue predators who target children. Patel thanked the FBI agents involved in the investigation, including those from Mexico, the Philippines, and the Marshall Islands, for their assistance in the case.
Markle faces a single charge of possession of child sexual abuse material, which could result in up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. Bill Essayli, first assistant US attorney for California's central district, stated that these allegations are extremely serious and that they will prosecute Mr Markle to the fullest extent of federal law. He clarified that the investigation revealed no victims within the United States but acknowledged it is ongoing.
Meghan, wife of Prince Harry, expressed being "deeply distressed" last month about allegations that child sexual abuse images were found at her father's prior residence in the Philippines. She mentioned sending a letter with "troubling allegations" about him to police in London back in 2018. Markle's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, claimed to have discovered a collection of images belonging to their father at his home in the Philippines and has been named a person of interest in the case.
Authorities in the Philippines are conducting an investigation into allegations against Markle, while British police are referring claims about him to overseas law enforcement, as they found prior allegations had not been addressed appropriately. Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, did not attend the 2018 wedding of his daughter and Prince Harry due to their contentious relationship. Meghan has indicated she distanced herself from him to protect her children.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Britain this summer after spending six years in the US. Markle's case is listed as United States of America v. Thomas Wayne Markle, and attempts by the Associated Press to contact his court-appointed lawyer for a comment were unsuccessful.
