Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in the United States on charges of possessing child pornography. He was taken into custody on Friday morning at the Maravida Senior Living care home in Lakeland, Florida, where he was recuperating from recent medical treatment. Markle was seen in a wheelchair as FBI agents led him away. The arrest was announced by Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for California.

The FBI reported that it had seized 78 items from two storage units allegedly rented by Markle in the Los Angeles area. The seized items included three images showing Markle with underage girls. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Markle could face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison if convicted. Essayli stated that the allegations are serious and disturbing, and that they will prosecute to the fullest extent of federal law.

FBI Director Kash Patel commented on the arrest, saying that Markle allegedly targeted innocent children. The investigation into Markle's activities began after his son, Thomas Markle Jr, reported him to the police in the Philippines. Thomas Markle Jr found disturbing images in his father's belongings in Cebu City, prompting an investigation that has now extended to a second set of material allegedly found in a storage unit near Rosarito, Mexico.

Markle has admitted to paying for sex in the Philippines but denies possessing any child abuse images. He dismissed his son's accusations as "sick lies." The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, expressed that she was "deeply distressed" by the allegations. She recalled being sent a troubling letter by the Metropolitan Police seven years ago regarding her father, which she believed should have been investigated further.

The police have confirmed that they did not share these details with other law enforcement, prompting an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Meghan Markle emphasized her estrangement from her father and the protective measures taken for her children. She stated, "Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served."

Thomas Markle Jr has now been named as a person of interest in the Philippine investigation into his father. The Philippine interior secretary has indicated that there are signs suggesting his involvement, although he is not currently treated as a suspect. Upwards of 7,000 images and one video of underage individuals were reportedly found among Mr Markle Sr's possessions.

The Philippine interior secretary described the findings as "the most deplorable displays of impunity." Markle is expected to appear in court later in Tampa. The investigation into Markle's activities is ongoing, and it is unclear what the consequences will be for him if he is convicted.
