Thai Regional Container Lines (RCL) has placed an order with Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in China for the construction of four new container ships. Each ship will have a capacity of 3,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This order brings RCL's total tally at Huangpu Wenchong to 16 vessels across three different designs. The order comes as part of RCL's rapid expansion, adding a new class of vessels to its growing fleet.
The contract was signed for four ships from the Honghu series, which are designed and built by Huangpu Wenchong. This series adds to RCL's diverse orderbook that includes eight ships with a capacity of 4,488 TEUs, four feeder ships with a capacity of 1,900 TEUs, and now four ships with a capacity of 3,100 TEUs. The financial details of the deal, including the price and delivery schedule, have not been disclosed.
This latest order follows a previous booking by RCL for four 1,900 TEU ships at the same Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard just a month earlier. According to reports by Alphaliner in August, the prices for similar newbuild vessels were estimated to be around $32 million per ship. At the time, RCL had already contracted for the construction of eight vessels with a capacity of approximately 4,300 TEUs at Huangpu Wenchong.
The signing of the contract coincided with the delivery of RCL's first new vessel with a capacity of 4,488 TEUs from Huangpu Wenchong. The Chinese shipyard also announced the naming of two more sister ships. RCL's relationship with Huangpu Wenchong dates back to 2024 when it initially contracted for four vessels of this class, later expanding the order to eight ships.
The addition of the four new 3,100 TEU ships will introduce a third vessel size to RCL's fleet and add 12,400 TEUs to the Thai company's orderbook. This development underscores RCL's commitment to expanding its fleet to meet growing demand in the shipping market. The new vessels are expected to enhance RCL's operational capabilities and efficiency.
