Texans and Ugandans on Mission (T&UM), a non-profit organization founded in 2008, is seeking a Sustainability Coordinator to oversee the operation, maintenance, and sustainability of community water points in Gulu, Uganda. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the long-term functionality of borehole infrastructure and promoting community engagement and ownership. T&UM is committed to humanitarian work and community development, providing sustainable safe water, health-promotions, and economic initiatives while sharing the love of God.
The Sustainability Coordinator will play a crucial role in community preparation prior to water point installation, overseeing day-to-day operations, conducting regular maintenance follow-ups, and implementing sustainability measures. The coordinator will work closely with community members, local authorities, and relevant stakeholders to promote community engagement and ownership of the borehole infrastructure. The role requires spiritual leadership, integrity, honesty, and fairness in all interactions and business dealings.
Key duties and responsibilities of the Sustainability Coordinator include designing sustainability structures and actions, leading initial identification of communities, recruiting community-based organizations, and developing monthly, quarterly, and annual sustainability plans and budgets. The coordinator will also be responsible for implementing Country Strategic Paper (CSP) sustainability strategies and forming and training community-based management structures such as water user committees (WUCs).
The Sustainability Coordinator will also be responsible for documentation, research, and reporting, producing accurate, timely, concise, and high-quality periodic reports. The coordinator will collect, verify, and synchronize accurate data using the Survey 123 data App and annually review the functionality of water points in consultation with the M&E officer. The role requires familiarity with T&UM global minimum standards and ensuring compliance in the sustainability component.
Sustainability initiatives are a critical aspect of the Sustainability Coordinator's role, including implementing T&UM exit strategies to ensure sustainability after exit, developing and implementing sustainability plans to extend the lifespan of borehole infrastructure, and promoting water conservation practices within the community. The coordinator will guide communities to set up periodic water user fees and develop bylaws to govern their water points.
Community engagement is also a vital part of the Sustainability Coordinator's role, including sensitizing and fostering strong relationships with community members to encourage active participation in borehole management and maintenance. The coordinator will organize community meetings and workshops to raise awareness about the importance of clean water, borehole sustainability, and hygiene practices, and collaborate with local organizations and authorities to mobilize resources and support for borehole projects.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in sustainability, community development, and project management, with experience working in a similar role in Uganda. The Sustainability Coordinator will report to the WASH Program Manager and will be based in Gulu, Uganda. The application deadline for the position is October 12.
