The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken a significant step in its fight against the vandalism of electricity infrastructure. According to M.K. Bello, Kano Regional General Manager of TCN, over 30 suspected vandals have been arrested, particularly along the Kumbotso-Zaria transmission line corridor. These arrests were made possible through the cooperation between TCN, traditional rulers, residents, the police, and other security agencies.
The arrests were announced during a sensitisation campaign against the vandalism of electricity infrastructure and encroachment on transmission lines in Paki community, Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Bello expressed gratitude to the community, especially the district head, the police, and other security agencies, for their cooperation and support in protecting TCN's transmission infrastructure. This collaborative effort aims to safeguard the country's electricity supply.
The vandalism of transmission towers has been a significant concern for TCN. Bello revealed that about 10 transmission towers were vandalised within four to five months this year. Furthermore, five related cases are currently before the courts. He warned that damage to these facilities could disrupt electricity supply and cost the company a substantial amount of money to replace them.
Bello also raised concerns about excavation, construction, and pit-digging activities close to transmission towers. He warned that such practices could weaken the structures and cause them to collapse. Transmission lines carry electricity over distances of between 200 and 300 kilometres, making the towers critical to the movement of power across locations.
The regional manager emphasised the importance of transmission towers in supporting lines that transmit electricity over long distances. He explained that if any of these towers were to collapse, it would cost a lot of money to replace them. Bello urged residents to avoid activities that could endanger transmission towers and to report suspected vandalism or encroachment to the appropriate authorities.
TCN currently has about five cases before the courts related to vandalism. Bello's warning and the arrests made so far demonstrate TCN's commitment to protecting its infrastructure. The company is working to ensure that the country's electricity supply remains stable and reliable.
In conclusion, TCN's efforts to combat vandalism and encroachment on transmission lines are ongoing. With the cooperation of local communities and security agencies, the company aims to prevent further damage to its infrastructure. Residents are urged to report any suspicious activities to prevent disruptions to the electricity supply.
