The Taraba State government has announced a N2.5 billion intervention package aimed at supporting vulnerable households, youths, and communities affected by crises statewide. This initiative was disclosed by Governor Agbu Kefas during a statewide broadcast marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary. The package is designed to provide relief to those severely impacted by various crises in the state.

A significant portion of the package, N500 million, has been allocated to the six-month Taraba Cares Social Investment and Poverty Relief Programme. This programme, set to run from October 2026 to March 2027, will prioritize assistance for widows with dependents, older persons without reliable income, persons with disabilities, and other households facing severe hardship. The selection of beneficiaries will be based on verified need, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.

In addition to the Taraba Cares programme, N1 billion each will be allocated to the Taraba State Youth Development Agency and crisis recovery efforts in Karim Lamido and other affected parts of the state. These funds aim to support youth development initiatives and facilitate recovery in communities impacted by crises. The governor emphasized the importance of transparent and needs-based distribution of these resources.

Governor Kefas also directed the implementing agencies to publish eligibility requirements, registration procedures, and a complaints channel for the Taraba Cares programme. This move is aimed at ensuring transparency and accessibility for all potential beneficiaries. By making these details publicly available, the government seeks to foster trust and inclusivity in the programme's implementation.

Furthermore, Governor Kefas announced the unveiling of a 168-Ward Quick Impact Development Programme before the end of October. This initiative will see each ward receive a visible project selected according to local needs. The programme emphasizes community participation in identifying priorities and will be assessed based on projects completed and benefits delivered.

In a move to improve the welfare and professional standards of teachers, Governor Kefas announced the commencement of the Taraba Teachers’ Welfare, Professionalisation and Housing Programme in 2027. A time-bound committee will be established to consult with teachers and their unions on welfare, professional standards, sustainable salary improvements, and housing, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Lastly, the governor unveiled plans to harness the state’s aquatic resources, including rivers, lakes, dams, and wetlands, for fisheries, food production, processing, and employment for youths, women, and fishing communities. This initiative aims to explore and tap into the state's natural resources to create economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.
