Tanzania's ambitious infrastructure development plans and a severe housing shortage have created a surge in demand for construction materials, attracting investors to the sector. The country's rapid expansion of roads, railways, and public facilities has transformed it into a major construction hub. This growth has been highlighted at the 27th Build Expo Africa 2026 in Dar es Salaam, where government officials and trade experts are discussing opportunities in the industry.

Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development Minister Dr Leonard Akwilapo emphasized the country's construction boom, stating that Tanzania is now like a large construction site. He cited ongoing projects, including road construction, classroom and building development, and rapid transit and railway expansion. Dr Akwilapo encouraged local manufacturers and international investors to increase production to meet the growing market needs.

The government views construction and real estate as strategic sectors under Tanzania's Development Vision 2050. This vision aims to increase demand for affordable housing, serviced land, commercial and industrial buildings, schools, hospitals, and resilient urban infrastructure. Dr Akwilapo supported the Build Expo, citing its role in enabling professionals, investors, and contractors to exchange knowledge and access technologies from different countries.

Business Development Manager at the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE), Mr Deo Shayo, highlighted the significant investment opportunities presented by Tanzania's housing deficit and rapid urbanization. The country faces a housing shortage of over three million units, with an annual demand for new housing of approximately 200,000 units. Mr Shayo encouraged international exhibitors to consider establishing local manufacturing operations, joint ventures, and partnerships.

Mr Shayo emphasized that local production could create jobs, strengthen value chains, and reduce dependence on imports. He stated that TANTRADE is ready to support and guide investors through relevant regulatory frameworks, trade procedures, and business linkages to facilitate successful investment and trade partnerships. This approach aims to promote sustainable economic growth and development in the construction sector.

The Build Expo Africa 2026 provides a platform for professionals, investors, and contractors to explore opportunities in Tanzania's construction industry. The event showcases the latest technologies and innovations in the sector, enabling attendees to network and establish partnerships. With the country's infrastructure drive and housing needs, the expo is expected to attract significant interest from investors and industry experts.
