The Tanzanian government has revised the schedule for several national examinations in response to forecasts of heavy El Niño-related rains. The rains are expected to disrupt transport, flood some areas, and affect access to examination centres. The decision aims to minimise potential disruptions, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and transport difficulties.
Under the revised schedule, the Standard Four National Assessment will be held on October 5–6, followed by the Standard Two assessment on October 7–8. The Form Two National Assessment will take place from October 12–23, and the Form Four National Examination will run from October 19 to November 6, 2026.
Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology Wanu Hafidh stated that the changes were made following a Tanzania Meteorological Authority forecast issued on August 18. The forecast indicated a strong possibility of an El Niño event affecting rainfall from October to December 2026 and continuing into January 2027.
The government is taking early precautionary measures to minimise the potential impact of the weather conditions. The Office of the Prime Minister issued official directives on September 2, 2026, stating that some areas of the country were at risk of being affected by the rains.
Heavy rains could affect the transportation and delivery of examination materials, prevent candidates and invigilators from reaching examination centres on time, and cause power outages and communication disruptions. The safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, invigilators, and other stakeholders are key considerations in revising the schedule.
The scale of the assessments is another factor, with the Standard Two assessment involving 21,353 schools and 21,008 schools administering the Standard Four assessment. If assessment centres are affected, a large number of students could face challenges, particularly day scholars under the age of 11 who require safe and child-friendly conditions.
The National Examinations Council of Tanzania will issue the official 2026 timetable, and the Ministry will work with regional and council authorities to ensure preparations are completed on time. Students, parents, and guardians are urged to follow official information from the Ministry and NECTA on the revised timetable and other arrangements.
