The government of Tanzania has received support from TotalEnergies Tanzania and Arena Recycling Ltd in its efforts to enhance environmental cleanliness and management. The two companies have launched a plastic waste collection and recycling project in Dar es Salaam, aiming to minimize the environmental effects of plastic waste by collecting and recycling it into various products, including construction materials like bricks.
According to Thomas Meitaroni, Sales Manager at TotalEnergies Tanzania, plastic waste takes a long time to decompose and requires a special collection and recycling process. The project will collect plastic waste and integrate it into a value chain, allowing it to be used as raw material and providing opportunities for Tanzanians. Meitaroni emphasized that the goal is to turn plastic waste into an opportunity through collection and recycling.
The project has started at five TotalEnergies fuel stations in Dar es Salaam, with plans to expand to other areas of the country. Hellena Sailas, Director of Arena Recycling Ltd, stated that the company is collaborating on the collection and recycling of plastic waste, transforming it into raw materials for construction materials. This initiative helps reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the environment and enables the reuse of waste in production activities.
Getrude Mpangile, Director of Legal and Relations at TotalEnergies Tanzania, said the project was born out of an idea from Arena Recycling and has been supported for its focus on promoting environmental cleanliness and sustainable use of plastic waste. The partnership is part of efforts by various stakeholders to find solutions to the challenge of plastic waste and develop the use of waste as a resource.
The project aligns with the Tanzanian government's goals to improve waste management and promote a cleaner environment. By collecting and recycling plastic waste, the project aims to reduce the environmental impact of waste and create new opportunities for economic growth. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and the local community.
The launch of the project marks a significant step towards addressing the issue of plastic waste in Tanzania. With the support of TotalEnergies Tanzania and Arena Recycling Ltd, the project is expected to make a positive impact on the environment and serve as a model for other initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices in the country.
