Tanzania's ladies golf team secured a bronze medal at the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy in Abuja, Nigeria, finishing third among 19 participating countries. The team, led by captain Madina Iddi, overcame challenging course and weather conditions to achieve the feat. Iddi praised teammates Hawa Wanyeche and Neema Olomi for their unity and determination, which helped Tanzania achieve the bronze medal.
The Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) president, Timea Chogo, led the team in her first international assignment, with vice-president Ayne Magombe serving as team manager. Iddi expressed gratitude to the TLGU, sponsors, and Tanzanians who supported the players, including those who traveled to Abuja to cheer them on. The team's participation was supported by several organizations, including the National Sports Council, CRDB Bank, and Tanzania Breweries Limited.
The bronze medal represents an improvement on Tanzania's fifth-place finish at the 2024 championship in Agadir, Morocco. The country has previously finished runners-up twice, in Abuja in 2010 and Accra in 2018. Iddi challenged the TLGU to review its preparations, improve player development, and identify more golfers capable of competing at the highest continental level.
Tanzania completed its campaign with its best performance on the final day at IBB International Golf and Country Club, returning 154 strokes on Friday to finish with an overall total of 479. The team's final-round score was jointly the best of the championship, matching Kenya's 154. Eventual winners South Africa posted 155.
Iddi and Wanyeche led Tanzania's charge with matching rounds of 77, while Olomi returned 83. Under the three-player team format, only the two best individual scores counted towards the daily total. The final round was particularly impressive for Iddi, whose 77 was a significant improvement on the 86 she carded on Thursday.
South Africa won the title with 464 strokes, while Kenya finished second on 470, seven strokes ahead of Tanzania. Host nation Nigeria finished fourth with 500 strokes, followed by Uganda on 504 and Zambia on 506. In the individual competition, Kenya's junior golfer Kanana Muthomi claimed the title with a total of 229 strokes.
The 2026 championship was played over 54 holes across three days, from November 4 to 6. Tanzania's participation was supported by several organizations and individual well-wishers. The team's achievement has set its sights on winning the All Africa Challenge Trophy, with Iddi urging the TLGU to strengthen its player development strategies ahead of the next championship.
