Tanzania and Finland have opened a new chapter in mineral research cooperation following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Tanzania's Geological Survey of Tanzania and the Geological Survey of Finland. The agreement aims to strengthen geological research and improve access to reliable information on Tanzania's mineral resources. This partnership builds on a previous MoU signed in 2024.

The partnership seeks to enhance the capacity of Tanzanian experts and improve access to scientific information to support the exploration, development, and value addition of the country's mineral resources. Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, said the Tanzanian government values the partnership, which provides an opportunity to strengthen the country's capacity to identify and analyze its mineral resources and determine their potential.

Mbibo emphasized that accurate geological information is essential for conducting research, planning the use of natural resources, and attracting investment into the mining sector. He added that the cooperation will transform the way Tanzania collects, analyzes, and uses geological information. The implementation of a programme to build the capacity of GST experts has already begun.

GTK Chief Executive Officer Dr. Saku Vuori said GTK experts are assessing additional areas for cooperation. Dr. Vuori also mentioned that GTK is ready to support GST in strengthening the capacity of its new laboratory under construction in Dodoma. This includes providing modern technology and equipment for analyzing and testing rock and mineral samples.

The initiative aims to enable Tanzania to obtain laboratory data that meets modern standards and can be used for research, mineral resource assessment, and investment decision-making. The European Union has expressed interest in supporting funding for the implementation of the partnership. The EU's support will focus on ensuring that geological data and information collected are accurate, reliable, and of sufficient quality to support investment.

The partnership between Tanzania and Finland is expected to have a positive impact on the country's mining sector. It will provide Tanzania with the necessary tools and expertise to unlock the full potential of its mineral resources. The agreement is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The cooperation between Tanzania and Finland is a testament to the country's efforts to strengthen its mining sector. With the support of international partners like Finland and the EU, Tanzania is well on its way to becoming a major player in the global mining industry. The country's mineral resources are vast and varied, and with the right expertise and technology, they can be harnessed to drive economic growth and development.
