The Tanzania Mines, Energy and Construction Workers' Union (TAMICO) has emphasized the need for stronger worker bargaining to enhance working conditions across the country. At a recent workshop in Dodoma, TAMICO General Secretary Paternus Rwechungura urged branch leaders to fortify their skills in worker organization, labor laws, and collective bargaining agreements. This effort aims to equip union leaders with the tools necessary to defend workers' rights effectively.
The workshop, which was a two-day capacity-building event, brought together branch leaders to enhance their understanding of labor laws, workplace dispute resolution, and negotiation strategies. Rwechungura stressed that unity among workers is crucial for achieving meaningful improvements in working conditions. He encouraged employees to pursue their rights without fear and emphasized that every worker has a role to play in strengthening the union.
Christian Denzin, Resident Director of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Tanzania, highlighted that workers' challenges are increasingly linked to broader economic changes and the evolving world of work. He emphasized that strong worker organization is more important than ever, and that workers can strengthen their position by organizing themselves and developing practical strategies. Denzin also underscored the importance of trade unions remaining democratic and independent to effectively represent workers.
Denzin further noted that trade unions need to examine the challenges associated with multinational companies and develop collective approaches to ensuring labor standards are respected. He called for a new generation of leaders capable of responding to emerging workplace challenges while safeguarding workers' interests. FES Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting TAMICO and other trade unions in the country.
The Dodoma workshop is part of a series of trade union empowerment initiatives supported by FES Tanzania. A similar program was held in Mwanza on September 16 and 17. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the TUCTA Labour College and equipped participants with practical knowledge of employment standards, labor laws, and collective bargaining agreements.
Participants at the workshop also discussed workplace productivity and sustainability, climate change, and the concept of a Just Transition, as well as youth and gender issues affecting the labor movement. The workshop aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of union leaders, enabling them to address emerging workplace challenges effectively.
The push for stronger worker bargaining and improved working conditions comes as TAMICO seeks to enhance its representation of workers in Tanzania. With the support of FES Tanzania, TAMICO is working to build a stronger, more effective union that can address the evolving needs of its members and promote better labor standards across the country.
