The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has announced plans to confer its 'Icon of Sports in Nigeria' award on Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani. This recognition is in honor of his administration's efforts to promote and develop sports in the state. SWAN's National Secretariat stated that the award is part of their efforts to acknowledge individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to the growth of sports in Nigeria.
According to SWAN National President, Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, the decision to award Governor Sani was informed by his administration's attention to sporting infrastructure, athletes, and sporting activities in Kaduna State. The recognition reflects the sustained attention to sports development under the present administration, particularly initiatives aimed at creating opportunities for young people and strengthening the environment for sporting activities.
Kaduna State has a long-standing sporting heritage, having produced prominent footballers, athletes, and other sports personalities who have represented Nigeria at national and international levels. SWAN's national president noted that the development of sports at the sub-national level requires sustained investment in infrastructure, grassroots talent development, and partnerships among government, sports administrators, athletes, the private sector, and the media.
The proposed recognition comes at a time when Kaduna is witnessing increased activity around sports infrastructure and the hosting of sporting events. One of the most prominent projects is the reconstruction of the historic Ahmadu Bello Stadium, a facility that has played a significant role in Kaduna's sporting history. In February 2026, the National Sports Commission and Kaduna State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding transferring ownership of the stadium to the state for immediate rehabilitation.
The Kaduna State Government has announced plans to transform the Ahmadu Bello Stadium into a major sporting complex with a projected seating capacity of about 32,000 to 33,000 and a hybrid grass-and-synthetic pitch. Governor Sani has also linked the investment to Kaduna's historical contribution to Nigerian football, saying the state had produced several players who went on to make their mark nationally and internationally.
Beyond the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, the administration has also overseen the upgrading of the Uba Sani Township Stadium, which has a 10,000-seat capacity and includes dressing rooms for home and away teams, a referees' room, media and conference facilities, as well as toilet facilities. The stadium is expected to host local league matches and provide another venue for sporting activities in the state.
The state has also continued to attract sporting activities involving national teams and international opponents. Kaduna is currently hosting the Super Sand Eagles' 23-day training camp, which began on September 21 and is scheduled to run until October 14, 2026. The programme includes international friendly matches against Senegal on October 2 and 4, as well as a CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Ghana on October 10.
