A suspected Ebola patient, identified as Abubakar Modinghi, fled from an isolation unit at Nasanga Health Centre III in Budaka district, eastern Uganda. According to the Acting District Health Officer, Hellen Wanyenze, Modinghi had been under surveillance after exhibiting symptoms similar to Ebola. He was reportedly picked up on October 31 from Nakajeti village, Macholi ward, Budaka Town Council.

Modinghi had recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a deadly Ebola outbreak has claimed over 5,000 lives. The district surveillance officer, Nasur Masaba, stated that Modinghi had been isolated but managed to escape from the facility. An extensive search is underway, but he remains at large, prompting fears of potential exposure to others.

The incident has raised concerns about the possibility of exposure, particularly if Modinghi had been in contact with individuals before fleeing the facility. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are unclear, including how he managed to leave the health facility. Health authorities are working to engage local communities to report any sightings of Modinghi.

Ebola is a serious and often deadly disease characterized by symptoms such as high fever, bleeding through body openings, sudden onset of fever, headache, intense body weakness, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, or urine. The disease has a high mortality rate, emphasizing the need for swift action to contain potential outbreaks.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Stephen Ogwang, reported that initial laboratory tests on samples taken from Modinghi returned negative results. However, further samples were taken, and results are expected within 72 hours. The district is not taking this case lightly, awaiting confirmation that the suspect is negative.

The Ministry of Health has urged calm among Budaka residents and the general public. According to Allan Ssempebwa, Ministry of Health Public Relations, tests carried out by the ministry show that samples turned out to be negative. However, health authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of surveillance and community engagement.

The incident highlights the challenges of disease surveillance and control in rural areas. Health authorities are working to track Modinghi and prevent potential spread of the disease. Key efforts include engaging local communities, enhancing surveillance, and ensuring timely laboratory testing to confirm or rule out Ebola.
