Sun King has expanded its solar inverter offering in Kenya to systems of up to 30 kilowatts, targeting larger households and businesses. This move aims to provide alternatives to unreliable grid power and diesel generators. The new PowerHub range extends Sun King's inverter portfolio from 2.2kW to 30kW, catering to the commercial and institutional market. The systems are designed for businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, offices, and light industrial operations.
The expanded PowerHub range allows Sun King to serve customers with higher electricity requirements. Multiple PowerHub units can be connected in parallel to increase total output. The systems can power equipment such as water pumps, washing machines, microwaves, and air conditioners. Customers can add battery storage and solar panels as their energy needs increase without replacing the existing system.
According to Atta Arome, Sun King's product head for solar inverter systems, the latest additions to the PowerHub range enable the company to serve homes, shops, businesses, schools, hospitals, and offices of virtually any size. Sun King is combining the larger systems with its pay-as-you-go financing model. The company offers the PowerHub range through its nationwide agent network.
The pay-as-you-go financing model allows customers to make monthly payments starting at KSh15,500 ($120) with a KSh22,600 down payment. This financing option makes it easier for businesses and households to adopt solar energy solutions. The expansion comes as Kenyan businesses seek greater control over electricity reliability and operating costs.
Solar-plus-storage systems offer an alternative to diesel generators during grid outages. Sun King has operated in Kenya since 2007 and says one in five Kenyans has access to its solar solutions. The company installs over 330,000 solar products each month across Africa. This significant presence in the region enables Sun King to support its customers throughout the product lifecycle.
Recently, Sun King launched its EZ 3 Series smartphones to deepen mobile connectivity in Africa. The company also secured a $5 million Series D equity investment from Acumen to unlock additional local-currency debt. In March, Sun King planned to invest up to $150 million in Ethiopia by 2030, targeting two million households and businesses.
Sun King's expansion in Kenya and Ethiopia is part of its broader $1.3 billion Africa expansion strategy through the end of the decade. The company designs and installs its systems, providing financing, warranty, and after-sales support. This approach allows Sun King to retain the customer relationship across the product lifecycle, ensuring reliable support for its customers.
