The University of Nzérékoré has welcomed 3,228 new students this year, but many are struggling to find affordable accommodation near the campus. Located in the Nakoyakpala neighborhood of Nzérékoré, the university is surrounded by areas with limited housing options, leaving students to search for alternative solutions. As a result, many students are forced to live far from the university, making it difficult for them to attend classes.

Sylla Abdoul Salam, a first-year student in the hydrology department, is one of the students facing accommodation challenges. He arrived in Nzérékoré without knowing anyone and had to rely on a friend to find temporary accommodation. Abdoul Salam spends up to 20,000 Guinean francs per day on transportation to and from the university, which is a significant burden for a student with limited resources.

The lack of affordable housing on or near campus is not only a financial challenge but also a logistical one. Gamy Pierre, a first-year student in the English department, lives in Kpama 2 and spends 20,000 Guinean francs per day on transportation to the university. He finds the long commute tiring and is concerned about the safety of traveling at night, especially when classes run until 20:00.

Jean-Claude Honomou, another first-year student in the English department, has been searching for accommodation near the university with no success. He currently lives in Bellevue, which requires him to travel long distances to attend classes. Honomou finds the commute exhausting, especially when classes run in the evening, and is worried about the safety of returning home late at night.

The students' struggles with accommodation have led them to appeal to the authorities for assistance. Abdoul Salam, Pierre, and Honomou all agree that the construction of dormitories on campus would greatly alleviate their challenges. They believe that having access to affordable and secure housing would enable them to focus on their studies without the added stress of finding a place to live.

The University of Nzérékoré's accommodation challenges are not unique, but they are particularly pressing given the large number of new students this year. The students' concerns highlight the need for investment in infrastructure, including housing, to support the growing student population. Until then, students will continue to face difficulties finding affordable accommodation and commuting to classes.

The situation at the University of Nzérékoré underscores the importance of addressing the accommodation needs of students. With 3,228 new students enrolled this year, the university must find ways to provide support and resources to help them succeed academically. By prioritizing the construction of dormitories and other infrastructure, the authorities can help alleviate the challenges faced by students and create a more conducive learning environment.
