The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has sought the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to address the issue of unauthorized occupation and activities on the beachfronts of the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. This move aims to protect the two hotels, which are part of SSNIT's investment portfolio and significant national assets in Ghana's hospitality and tourism sector.

According to SSNIT, the beachfront areas have been subjected to persistent unlawful occupation, encroachment, and unauthorized activities. These have posed considerable risks to the hotels and their operations, prompting the Trust to take action. The Board of Trustees of SSNIT emphasized that the hotels are crucial national assets that require protection to ensure their continued operation and revenue generation for contributors and pensioners.

SSNIT highlighted several risks associated with the continued encroachment, including threats to the safety and security of hotel guests, employees, and visitors. The Trust also cited increased exposure to fire, sanitation, environmental, and public health hazards, as well as the deterioration of the beachfront, privacy, and service standards of the hotels. Furthermore, construction activities along the beachfront have contributed to the degradation of the coastal ecosystem.

The Trust expressed concern that the encroachment could damage the reputation of the hotels, SSNIT, and Ghana's tourism industry. Disruption to hotel operations and the guest experience could lead to decreased patronage, revenue, and overall financial performance. SSNIT also noted that continued expansion of the encroachments could make recovery of affected lands increasingly difficult and costly.

In view of these concerns, SSNIT has requested support from the National Security Secretariat to protect the assets, which it described as belonging to Ghanaian workers. The Trust announced that the affected beaches would be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable state and would remain open to the public. This initiative aims to safeguard the investments and ensure sustainable returns for contributors and pensioners.

The Board of Trustees of SSNIT stressed that the two hotels form part of its investment portfolio and represent significant national hospitality and tourism assets. The Trust has a fiduciary responsibility to safeguard these investments, preserve their value, and ensure they continue to generate sustainable returns. SSNIT emphasized that these assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana.

SSNIT's action to seek National Security intervention underscores the importance of protecting national assets and ensuring the sustainability of investments. The Trust's efforts aim to address the encroachment issues and restore the beachfronts to a safe and desirable state, while also highlighting the need for collaboration between stakeholders to address similar challenges in the future.
