The Mauritanian government has secured significant funding from Japan to bolster its agricultural sector and food assistance programs. On Friday, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, Abdallahi Ould Souleimane Ould Cheikh Sidiya, signed two financing agreements with Japanese Ambassador to Mauritania, Hiroyuki Ocheda. The agreements total 800 million Japanese yen, equivalent to approximately $203 million in new ouguiyas.

The first agreement, valued at 400 million yen, aims to support the country's economic and social development program. The funds will be used to provide modern agricultural equipment and machinery, as well as educational materials to training and agricultural extension institutions located along the Senegal River. This initiative seeks to enhance the capacity of these institutions and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

The second agreement, also worth 400 million yen, is part of Japan's food assistance program. The funds will be used to support income-generating projects, replenish national strategic cereal stocks, and strengthen the market's ability to ensure a regular supply of essential products. This will help stabilize prices and ensure food security for vulnerable populations.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development, these agreements demonstrate the strong and solid relations of friendship and cooperation between Mauritania and Japan. The two countries have enjoyed a remarkable development in their cooperation over the years, focusing on areas such as fisheries, health, education, vocational training, and the environment.

The Minister of Economic Affairs and Development emphasized that these agreements will have a positive impact on the country's agricultural sector and food security. The provision of modern equipment and machinery will enhance productivity, while the food assistance program will help alleviate hunger and malnutrition.

Japan's support for Mauritania's agricultural sector is expected to have long-term benefits for the country's economic development. By investing in sustainable agricultural practices and food security, Japan is helping to promote economic growth and reduce poverty in the region.

The implementation of these agreements is expected to commence soon, with the Mauritanian government working closely with Japanese officials to ensure the effective use of funds. The country's agricultural sector is expected to benefit significantly from this cooperation, leading to improved food security and economic prospects for its citizens.
