Otunba Segun Sowunmi, Convener of ‘The Alternative Movement,’ has intensified his campaign for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in Ogun East senatorial district. He visited Ijebu Igbo, headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Area, where he urged voters to mobilise massively for the incumbent president in next year’s general election. Sowunmi said Ogun East senatorial district has benefitted significantly from Tinubu's current term.
Sowunmi highlighted the benefits that have come to Ogun East from Tinubu's administration, emphasizing that the president deserves maximum votes from the people of the district. He noted that Ogun State has a significant voter population of nearly three million registered voters, capable of producing a high voter turnout comparable to major northern states like Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna.
Sowunmi expressed confidence that Tinubu would win in Ogun State, but stressed the importance of voters turning out in large numbers to translate their support into actual votes. He urged voters to focus on producing quality numbers for the president, rather than speculating about the outcome of the election.
In addition to supporting Tinubu's re-election, Sowunmi threw his weight behind Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in the contest for the Ogun East senatorial district. He argued that Abiodun's proximity to the presidency and the business community could enhance the prospects of attracting federal investments to the state.
Sowunmi cautioned against what he described as political games over the senatorial contest, stressing that the choice of representative for the district should prioritize the interests and development needs of the zone and the state. He emphasized that the senatorial election should not be taken lightly.
Sowunmi highlighted some of the mega projects that Abiodun has brought to the senatorial district, including the Deep-Sea Port Project, the resumption of oil production at Eba, and the Gateway International Airport. He believes that Abiodun's connections could be beneficial to Ogun State in attracting investments and facilitating access to opportunities at the federal level.
Meanwhile, Sowunmi has dismissed speculation about President Tinubu’s health, describing claims that the president is medically unfit to seek re-election in 2027 as unfounded. This comes after questions surrounding Tinubu's absence from the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
