A community dialogue was recently held in Yambio, the capital of Western Equatoria state in South Sudan, with 50 participants representing various groups in society. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) facilitated the discussion, which aimed to promote peace-building initiatives and cooperation among community members. The event was attended by women, youth, persons with disabilities, faith-based groups, traditional leaders, and security forces.

The dialogue emphasized the importance of cooperation and shared responsibility, continuing the message of the United Nations Day commemorations held the previous week. Moses Louis Magianga, who represented people living with disabilities, highlighted the need for community-led peacebuilding efforts and effective accountability mechanisms. He stressed that collective action and sharing individual stories are crucial steps towards building peace at the grassroots level.

Reverend Jacob Elinama Bisi appreciated the diversity among participants and urged his fellow peacebuilders to claim their individual and shared responsibilities. He emphasized that the outcome of the discussions rests with the community members and that they should make the most of the platform provided. Traditional leader Christine Ngbaazande also stressed the need for continued engagement among community members, local leaders, and security actors to sustain dialogue and address sources of conflict.

The participants unanimously agreed that lasting peace requires more than identifying problems; it depends on collective action, consistent dialogue, and a shared commitment to translating community recommendations into practical solutions. The forum provided an opportunity for participants to share examples of positive changes associated with cooperation and support from international friends, highlighting the importance of partnerships between the UN and local communities.

Colonel Daniel Fotur, a representative from the local police, shared that cooperation with the UN family has brought measurable positive changes to the police sector. He noted that providing platforms for communities to express their concerns has created a stronger foundation to prevent and respond to tensions. Bibi Kadija, a Civil Affairs Officer from UNMISS, reiterated the UN Peacekeeping mission's commitment to providing opportunities for communities to convene, connect, and empower themselves.

The community dialogue in Yambio demonstrated the importance of inclusive peace-building initiatives that bring together diverse segments of society. The event showed that cooperation and collective action can lead to positive changes and foster a foundation for lasting peace. The UNMISS-facilitated dialogue is part of a broader effort to promote peace and development in Western Equatoria state and beyond.
