The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has arrested three South African nationals for their involvement in international drug trafficking. The arrests were made in separate operations, with large quantities of illicit substances recovered, including heroin, cocaine, and synthetic cannabis. The NDLEA expressed concerns over the negative impression these arrests could create about Nigeria internationally, particularly amid concerns over foreign nationals' involvement in moving illicit drugs through the country.
According to Assistant Director, Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Francis Okogun, investigations showed that some foreign nationals were increasingly facilitating the movement of illicit substances through Nigeria to other countries, while others were involved in bringing drugs into the country. The NDLEA spokesman emphasized that the issue had attracted attention due to the negative impression it could create about Nigeria internationally.
The quantities and variety of drugs recovered from the suspects suggested possible links to international drug trafficking networks. The NDLEA said the arrests were significant due to the large quantities of drugs recovered, including heroin, cocaine, and synthetic cannabis. These individuals are suspected of working on behalf of international drug cartels.
The NDLEA has commenced further investigations to establish the destinations of the seized substances and identify the cartels sponsoring the operations. Okogun explained that investigations into international drug trafficking were often complicated by the reluctance of suspects to disclose information about their sponsors and the final destinations of consignments.
This is not the first time South African nationals have been arrested in Nigeria for drug trafficking. In October 2026, a South African woman, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, was arrested at the Port Harcourt International Airport over the alleged importation of 32.74 kilogrammes of synthetic cannabis. Earlier, on July 6, 2026, another South African national, Will Jessica Ann, was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, with 5.75 kilogrammes of heroin concealed in her luggage.
The NDLEA is conducting painstaking investigations to establish the actual destinations of the drugs and identify the cartels responsible for the shipments. Okogun said that drug traffickers rarely volunteer information about their sponsors or the final destinations of their consignments, making investigations challenging.
The NDLEA's efforts to curb international drug trafficking are ongoing, with the agency working to identify and disrupt the networks involved in the trade. The arrests of the three South African nationals are a significant step in this effort, and the NDLEA is committed to continuing its work to prevent Nigeria from being used as a route for international drug trafficking.
