Police in South Africa are investigating a double murder that occurred on November 2 in Klipspruit West near Eldorado Park, a Johannesburg suburb plagued by gang violence. The victims, a man and a woman, were found dead in a Toyota Urban Cruiser with bullet holes on the driver's door. Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Mudau stated that the police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The woman killed in the shooting has been identified as Nadine Meintjes, an attorney who was admitted to the High Court three years ago. According to her LinkedIn profile, Meintjes previously worked at BDK Attorneys before joining DVB Attorneys in November 2024. Her death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from the legal community.
Meintjes had represented Juwairiya Kaldine, a Patriotic Alliance (PA) ward councillor from Eldorado Park, in a harassment and protection order case. Kaldine confirmed that Meintjes had served as her legal representative and described her as a dedicated attorney. Kaldine has been active in addressing gang violence and crime in her community.
Kaldine's name has been linked to controversy in the past, particularly in relation to a recording that surfaced in January 2024. The recording allegedly featured Kaldine making claims about PA leader Gayton McKenzie and Chinelle Stevens, the party's secretary-general. McKenzie denied the allegations, stating that the recording had been doctored.
A cease-and-desist letter dated January 2026 connects Kaldine to Meintjes, revealing that Meintjes had served as Kaldine's legal representative in a harassment and protection order matter. The letter provided insight into Kaldine's actions and the type of work Meintjes was doing, including her involvement in cracking down on "lolly lounges" – drug dens – in the community.
The cease-and-desist letter also described an incident in which Kaldine and her team made a civilian arrest at a premises where someone was allegedly selling drugs. The incident led to a case of kidnapping and common assault being opened against Kaldine's team, although the charges were ultimately not prosecuted.
Tributes have continued to pour in for Meintjes, with Spangenberg Attorneys Inc. issuing a statement expressing shock and sadness at her "tragic passing". The legal community is mourning the loss of a dedicated attorney who had been working tirelessly to address the issues affecting her community.
