The Chief of Defence Forces of the Somalia National Army (SNA), Major General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud, recently commended Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). He praised their efforts in restoring peace and stability in the country. The meeting took place at the SNA 08 Brigade Headquarters in Embresso, Barawe District, with the Commander of Battle Group 45, Col Dr Justus Musenene.
Major General Ibrahim acknowledged the sacrifices made by Ugandan troops, stating that their contributions to Somalia's security would remain part of the country's history. He also commended the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his commitment to Pan-Africanism, which has strengthened relations between Uganda and Somalia. These remarks highlight the significant role of UPDF troops in Somalia.
Major General Ibrahim revealed that Uganda and Somalia are in advanced discussions to promote Ugandan coffee in the Somali market. The goal is to make Ugandan coffee the leading coffee brand in Somalia. This development indicates a potential boost in trade relations between the two countries.
In response to the commendation, Col Dr Justus Musenene expressed gratitude to the Somali military leadership for recognising the contributions of UPDF troops. He described this recognition as a significant morale booster for the troops. Col Musenene also appreciated the cooperation of SNA personnel and local communities during joint operations.
Col Musenene, who has served in the area for a year, noted that he had not experienced challenges in working with the Somali military or local population. He urged SNA personnel to uphold patriotism, love for their country, and commitment to defending Somalia. These values, he emphasised, are crucial in sustaining peace and stability.
During the meeting, Col Musenene briefed Major General Ibrahim on the progress made through UPDF mentorship and capacity-building programmes. He highlighted improvements in the Somali army's ability to independently defend the country. The meeting was attended by several senior officers from both the UPDF and SNA.
The commendation of UPDF troops by Major General Ibrahim demonstrates the significant impact of their role in Somalia. Key initiatives, such as promoting Ugandan coffee in the Somali market, are expected to enhance trade relations between Uganda and Somalia.
