The signalisation works on the Kasaï River, covering a 605-kilometre stretch between Kwamouth and Ilebo, have been completed. Brinto Desami, responsible for hydrography in the Grand Bandundu region, announced the achievement on 27 October 2026. The project aims to improve navigation safety and reduce the risk of river accidents. New signalisation devices have been installed to help boats navigate more safely.

The installed devices will enable boats to better orient themselves and navigate the waterway more safely. Brinto Desami urged users of the Kasaï River to respect the indications provided by the beacons to avoid navigation incidents. The Kasaï River is a vital transportation route in the centre-west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, used daily for the transport of people and goods between several provinces.

The responsible authority for hydrography in Grand Bandundu emphasised the need for regular maintenance of the signalisation due to the constantly changing river conditions. The water level and the presence of sand, which can alter the passage of boats, change over time. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly verify and renew the signalisation to guarantee safer navigation.

The Kasaï River is one of the main inland waterways in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The signalisation project was undertaken using the boat Kauka, which is currently stationed at the Office national des transports (ONATRA) port in Bandundu-Ville. Stakeholders in the sector hope that this operation will contribute to reducing river accidents and improving traffic flow on this important navigation corridor.

Brinto Desami's call for regular maintenance of the signalisation is based on the dynamic nature of the river. The Grand Bandundu region's hydrography expert stressed that changes in water levels and sand deposits require periodic reassessment of the signalisation. This would ensure that navigation remains safe and efficient.

The completion of the signalisation works on the Kasaï River is expected to have a positive impact on the region's transportation network. By reducing the risk of accidents and improving navigation, the project aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the waterway. The project's success will be closely monitored by stakeholders in the sector.

The authorities are optimistic that the signalisation project will achieve its objectives, contributing to the development of the region's transportation infrastructure. Further efforts are expected to maintain and improve the signalisation, ensuring the continued safe use of the Kasaï River for transportation.
