Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has stated that former Governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, is facing the consequences of his alleged misgovernance and irresponsibility while in office. Sani made these comments during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today. He noted that being out of power naturally leads to losing friends and seeing things differently. Sani emphasized that El-Rufai's current situation is a result of his actions while in office.
Sani accused El-Rufai of having no respect for the rule of law while in office and disobeying court orders. He claimed that El-Rufai arrested many people and sent them to jail, and now he has found himself in a similar situation. Sani listed several cases to support his claims, including the arrest of Vanguard correspondent, Luka Binyat, who spent almost a year in prison for writing a report. He also cited the case of 89 community leaders from Kachia Local Government who were arrested after protesting the killing of their leader.
According to Sani, Kaduna witnessed a lot of misgovernance and the use of state power to attack opponents between 2015 and 2023. He alleged that the El-Rufai administration failed to support security agencies, particularly in addressing insecurity in Southern Kaduna. Sani faulted those defending El-Rufai, saying most commentators have never visited the affected areas. He emphasized that terrorists and bandits have been killing people in Southern Kaduna for over a decade without any intervention from the state government.
Sani also recalled that Luka Binyat was jailed for exposing an alleged payment to bandits by the state government. He questioned the sympathy being expressed for El-Rufai, asking where those people were when El-Rufai was arresting and sending people to prison in Kaduna. Sani praised Governor Uba Sani, describing him as the best thing to happen to Kaduna State for building peace between Northern and Southern Kaduna.
Sani attributed the peace in Kaduna to Governor Uba Sani's efforts, noting that he has been able to use the resources of the state for the betterment of the lives of the people. He added that Governor Sani has built a bridge of peace between Hausa Muslims from Northern Kaduna and Christians from the Southern part of the state. For the first time, there has been no ethno-religious violence in the state.
Sani predicted that Governor Uba Sani would be re-elected, citing his interventions in health, education, and infrastructure. He noted that Governor Sani has created a good working relationship and a conducive atmosphere for people of all religions and ethnic groups. Sani also commented on President Bola Tinubu's decision to have Vice President Kashim Shettima represent him at the United Nations General Assembly.
Sani stated that President Tinubu acted within his constitutional rights by sending Vice President Shettima to represent him at the UNGA. He noted that the President needs a Vice President who is able, competent, and capable of delivering the message in his absence. Sani emphasized that the constitution enables and empowers the President to send his Vice President to represent him.
