Children living along the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) corridor in Voi are being sensitized on railway safety as operators seek to reduce accidents and protect railway infrastructure. The safety campaign was conducted at Kalela Comprehensive School, where learners were taught about the dangers of crossing railway tracks at unauthorized points and the importance of using designated crossings. This initiative aims to educate the children on safe practices around railway facilities.
The safety campaign, conducted by Africa Star Railway Operation Company Limited (Afristar), focused on community sensitization and the protection of railway infrastructure from vandalism. Afristar Track Department representative Yin Tiande emphasized that community sensitization has contributed significantly to the safe operation of the SGR. He noted that the SGR has been able to operate safely for over nine years due to safety measures put in place.
During the campaign, learners were urged to remain alert around railway facilities and share safety messages with their families and communities. Afristar Head of Safety Xu Yuanliang encouraged residents to report individuals suspected of vandalizing SGR facilities. He provided a contact number, 0709 388 880, for reporting such incidents. This initiative aims to foster a sense of responsibility among the community in protecting the SGR.
The learners were also taken through the history of railways in Kenya and the role of the SGR in transporting people and goods and connecting communities. They were introduced to career opportunities in the railway sector, including track maintenance, signaling, safety, and operations. This educational aspect of the campaign aims to inspire and inform the next generation about the importance and opportunities in the railway industry.
The safety program was held alongside Afristar's continued support for Kalela Comprehensive School. In 2024, the company donated learning and teaching facilities worth Sh1 million to the school. The donation included desks, chairs, staffroom and office furniture, lockers, printers, sports equipment, and jerseys. This contribution has significantly improved the learning environment at the school.
Teacher Agnes Mwamiso noted that the donation addressed shortages that had affected learning, with children previously sitting on the floor or sharing desks. She stated that the improved learning environment has contributed to better academic performance and increased enrollment. Grade 7 learner Benson Kaba expressed his appreciation for the donation, noting that learning became more comfortable and enjoyable.
Afristar CSR Coordinator Winrose Wachira stated that education is one of the three pillars of the company's corporate social responsibility program. The company's efforts to support education and promote railway safety demonstrate its commitment to the community and the development of Kenya's railway sector.
