Seven political parties in Enugu state, Nigeria, have signed a peace agreement in preparation for the upcoming local government polls scheduled for September 26, 2026. The parties that signed the agreement include the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT), and National Rescue Movement (NRM), among others. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Executive Chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Prof. Christian Ngwu, who emphasized the importance of the peace agreement. Ngwu, represented by Commissioner One in ENSIEC, Dr. Solomon Udeh, stated that the agreement was crucial in ensuring that political parties, candidates, and supporters maintain decorum before, during, and after the polls.
According to Ngwu, the peace agreement commits various political parties, candidates, and their supporters to peaceful, non-violent, free, and inclusive participation at the polls. He noted that they must respect other candidates and their parties, security agencies, and the electoral process, as well as the declared results after the polls. Ngwu also emphasized the need for peaceful resolution of internal party matters and peaceful campaigns.
The ENSIEC chairman assured that the commission would conduct a free, fair, and credible poll, providing all political parties and their candidates with a level playing field. He stated that the commission had concluded all arrangements for the polls and had put in place all necessary requirements for a hitch-free election on September 26.
In response, the Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, expressed the party's commitment to the peace agreement. Chukwunweike noted that the APC had always and would continue to subscribe to all guidelines that promote peaceful conduct of the polls. He also stated that the party's campaigns and activities had been "very peaceful".
