Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE has outlined the key priorities for his government, just three days ahead of the opening of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar. At a cabinet meeting on October 28, the President emphasized the importance of ensuring the success of the YOG, which will run from October 31 to November 13. He called for a national mobilization to guarantee the smooth running of the competitions and to extend a warm welcome to foreign delegations.

The President will personally preside over the opening ceremony at the Senegal stadium in Diamniadio. In addition to the YOG, President FAYE highlighted the need for economic recovery, social stability, and the development of the craft sector. He urged the Prime Minister to accelerate the implementation of projects included in the 2026 revised finance bill and the 2027 finance bill. This includes reviving stalled construction projects and evaluating the Economic and Social Recovery Plan (PRES).

On the economic front, President FAYE also stressed the importance of accelerating rural electrification and hydraulic projects, including the Grand Water Transfer to Touba-Mbacké. He also called for the settlement of domestic debt and the pursuit of dialogue with trade unions to maintain social stability, in line with the Pact of Social Stability signed on May 1, 2025. This pact aims to promote social cohesion and stability in the country.

To boost the craft sector, President FAYE recommended the registration of craft actors, improving their access to public contracts, and creating a special financing fund in the short term. He also announced an inter-ministerial council dedicated to the sector, which will take place before the end of 2026. This council will aim to develop a comprehensive strategy for the craft sector and provide support to craft actors.

In the area of civil security, President FAYE requested the acceleration of the transformation plan for the National Brigade of Firefighters, with the objective of equipping each department with an operational fire and rescue company. He also called for the revision of road accident prevention and crisis management systems. This will help to improve the country's disaster response and emergency services.

The President's priorities also include the development of the craft sector and the strengthening of civil security. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges facing the country. The government will need to work closely with various stakeholders, including trade unions, craft actors, and local communities, to achieve these objectives.

President FAYE's priorities reflect the government's commitment to promoting economic growth, social stability, and human development in Senegal. The success of the YOG and the implementation of these priorities will be closely watched by the Senegalese people and the international community. The government's efforts to address the country's challenges will be crucial in shaping the country's future.
