The 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar, Senegal, kicked off on October 31, 2026, with 2,655 young athletes aged 14 to 17 from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs). This fourth summer edition marks a significant milestone with the participation of a refugee Olympic team and perfect gender parity. The games will run until November 13, 2026.

For the first time in YOG history, a refugee Olympic team is participating, consisting of six young athletes, three girls and three boys, all based in Africa. They will compete in athletics, judo, and taekwondo. This inclusion highlights the values of inclusion and solidarity promoted by the Olympic movement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reported that around 2,700 qualification spots were allocated for the event.

The 2026 YOG in Dakar also achieves a major milestone with perfect gender parity. The games feature 73 female and 73 male events, along with seven mixed events. A total of 25 sports are on the program, with 153 medal events. Additionally, ten engagement sports are included to encourage the discovery of new disciplines and youth participation beyond official competitions.

The host country, Senegal, has a significant presence at the games. The Senegalese National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSS) selected 136 athletes to represent the country in 23 disciplines. Initially allowed to enter 139 athletes, Senegal's participation is a record in its Olympic history. The local delegation aims to capitalize on home advantage to excel in front of their audience.

Beyond athletic achievements, the 2026 YOG places emphasis on supporting young athletes. Forty-two model athletes, including Olympic champions and medalists, are involved in sharing their experiences and mentoring participants through educational workshops and sessions. This initiative aims to provide valuable guidance and inspiration to the next generation of athletes.

The games also feature a strong focus on development and legacy. The event is expected to leave a lasting impact on Senegal and the African continent, promoting sports development, education, and social integration. The YOG provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents, build friendships, and foster international understanding.
