The Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) recently conducted an oversight visit to the commission's headquarters in Enugu State. The committee, led by Chairman Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, aimed to assess the commission's facilities, ongoing preparations, and operational readiness. During the visit, the SEDC Managing Director, Mr. Mark Okoye, briefed the delegation on the commission's activities and progress.
According to Mr. Okoye, the SEDC has made significant progress in advancing preparatory work on strategic projects to accelerate economic growth and infrastructure development in the South-East region. These projects include planned gas pipeline and railway initiatives, as well as partnerships with key stakeholders across Federal MDAs, state governments, development partners, and the private sector. The commission is also promoting coordinated regional development and implementing the South-East Vision 2050 stakeholder consultations.
The South-East Vision 2050 stakeholder consultations, a major milestone, brought together government officials, business leaders, academics, development partners, and civil society groups to formulate a long-term development blueprint for the region. Additionally, the SEDC has implemented the South-East Venture Capital Programme, providing equity investments to 25 startups from the five South-East states through a competitive selection process aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.
The Senate committee's visit included a courtesy call on the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, and inspections of the commission's temporary and new headquarters. The lawmakers examined the office premises, furnishing, information and communications technology infrastructure, and overall readiness of the facilities to support the commission's operations. These inspections formed part of the committee's oversight responsibilities to evaluate the commission's facilities and ensure accountability in the use of public resources.
The committee's inspections aimed to provide first-hand information on the commission's current operational capacity and infrastructure needs as it works towards fulfilling its development objectives across the South-East region. Senator Kalu expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the commission's headquarters in Enugu, commending the management for improvements recorded since the committee's previous engagements.
Senator Kalu urged the SEDC management to sustain the progress recorded and ensure that its projects and interventions extend beyond its headquarters to communities across the five states. He stressed that residents need to see tangible results at the grassroots level, despite acknowledging that the commission is relatively new. The SEDC was established to promote development and address infrastructure and other developmental challenges across the region.
The South-East Development Commission was established to drive reconstruction, economic development, and regional transformation across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states. The commission's initiatives are expected to have a positive impact on the region's economic growth and infrastructure development. The Senate committee's visit is expected to provide valuable insights into the commission's operations and help identify areas for improvement.
