The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nominations of several individuals for chairmen and members of the boards of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC). This confirmation follows the consideration of reports by the Senate Committees on Finance and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The nominees were said to have been carefully selected by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights and promote fiscal discipline in the country.

Among those confirmed is Dr. Salamatu Husaini Suleiman as chairman of the NHRC. Other nominees confirmed to serve on the commission's board include Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim, Edmund Chinonye Obiagwu (SAN), Ogunji Chidozie Kingsley, Oluwakemi Asiwaju-Okenyodo, and Prof. Adedeji Adekunle. The list also includes Ayo Adewuyi, Muhammad Adelodun, Eze Anaba, Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, and Patience Patrick, among others. The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, which presented the report, stated that its members unanimously agreed that the nominees were qualified for the positions.

The Senate also confirmed all seven nominees to the FRC board through voice votes. Those confirmed alongside Dr. Abdullahi Saidu, the Executive Chairman, are Muhammad Asmau Mai-Eka, representing the Northwest; Muhammad Aliyu Makama, Northcentral; Suleiman Gidado, Northeast; Louis O. Ndukwe, Southsouth; Amechi Ugwele, Southeast; and Olaniyi Idowu Onikola, Southwest. The Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Kamarudeen Oyewumi, said the committee was satisfied with the qualifications of the nominees and their attestation letters.

According to Oyewumi, the FRC plays a critical role in promoting fiscal discipline, transparency, and accountability in public finance management. The committee's report stated that the nominee for Executive Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Saidu, possessed relevant experience in revenue administration. This experience is expected to be beneficial to the commission in its role of ensuring fiscal responsibility.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, hailed President Tinubu for appointing individuals he described as persons of substance to serve on the NHRC board. He expressed confidence that the nominees would strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in the country. The committee's report highlighted the importance of the NHRC in promoting and protecting human rights.

The confirmation of the nominees is seen as a significant step towards strengthening the NHRC and FRC. The NHRC is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria, while the FRC is responsible for ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency in public finance management. The Senate's confirmation of the nominees is expected to enhance the effectiveness of these commissions.

With the confirmation of the nominees, the NHRC and FRC are expected to be more effective in their roles. The nominees are expected to bring their expertise and experience to bear in promoting human rights and fiscal responsibility in Nigeria. The Senate's confirmation of the nominees is a positive development in the country's efforts to promote good governance and accountability.
