The 2026-2027 academic year officially commenced in the Gourma Rharous education district on October 1. The launch ceremony took place at the private "Handara" school, presided over by Captain Ousmane Coulibaly, the central sub-prefect representing the prefect of the cercle. He was accompanied by Mahamadou Yacouba Maïga, the director of the Gourma Rharous education academy. Various authorities, including communal and school officials, Committee of School Management presidents, financial partners, union representatives, and defense and security forces, were in attendance.
The ceremony began with the hoisting of national colors at 7:30 am, followed by a visit to a 6th-year class by the local executive representative and his delegation. They encouraged and offered advice to the students. Prior to this, the delegation observed a traditional model lesson, "Protecting One's Health," focusing on food safety in schools. This was a science lesson that preceded the regular classes.
The delegation then visited the public Lycée in Gourma Rharous, where they also offered encouragement and advice to students. The school's principal, Ousmane K. Maïga, highlighted the institution's primary challenge: a severe shortage of teachers since its establishment. Authorities noted the difficulties raised in both visited schools. Students expressed joy and eagerness to resume their studies.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the Gourma Rharous academic district has 4,510 students across two pedagogical animation centers: Gourma Rharous and Gossi. The Gourma Rharous center comprises 118 school structures, including 92 public schools, six private schools, one community school, six medersas, and 13 Early Childhood Development Centers. These statistics include 28 non-functional schools from the previous academic year.
Sidi Oumar Adiawiakoye, president of the public lycée's management committee, expressed confidence in a successful academic year but mentioned concerns about teacher shortages and insecurity in certain areas. Despite these challenges, he remained optimistic, citing resilience and commitment as key factors in overcoming obstacles. The school reopening was secured professionally by the region's defense forces.
The region's education infrastructure faces significant challenges, including a shortage of teachers and security concerns in some areas. However, stakeholders are committed to ensuring a smooth academic year. The authorities' engagement with students and school administrators aims to address these issues and provide support where needed.
As the new academic year progresses, the focus will be on maintaining stability and addressing the highlighted challenges. With 4,510 students returning to school, the education district's efforts to provide a conducive learning environment will be crucial in achieving academic success.
