Parents in Ejura Sekyedumasi are breathing a sigh of relief as they prepare their children for senior high school, thanks to a support program initiated by the Member of Parliament, Bawah Muhammed Braimah. Regina Appiah, a parent, had been worried about how she would provide the necessary items for her child to start school. With the support, she received essential items, including a trunk, chop box, and exercise books, which she believes will help secure her child's future.
The program, which targets students who obtained aggregates from six to nine, as well as the best students in their respective schools, aims to bridge the gap between the Free Senior High School policy and the actual cost of preparing for school. Franklina Sarpong, another beneficiary, had been struggling to provide basic items for her niece, including a trunk and chop box. With the support, she can now manage her finances and focus on other essential needs.
According to Mr. Braimah, the program was introduced because parents still have to provide basic items when their children enter senior high school, despite the tuition being covered under Ghana's Free SHS program. He explained that some students who qualify for senior high school can still struggle to begin their education due to the high cost of basic supplies required by the schools.
The support package, valued at over GH¢1,000 per student, includes metal trunks, mattresses, pillows, exercise books, and buckets. Mr. Braimah believes that this support will motivate students to work harder and encourage them to strive for academic excellence. He described the program as his contribution towards supporting students entering secondary school.
The program has been well-received by parents and students in the constituency, who are grateful for the assistance. Mrs. Appiah thanked the MP, the District Chief Executive, and other community leaders for their support and expressed her hope that similar initiatives will be implemented in the future.
