Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie recently shared a shocking experience on social media, recounting an encounter with a fan who asked to take a selfie with him moments after a serious road accident involving highlife musician Amakye Dede. The accident occurred on a trip from Kumasi to Amakye Dede's residence in Agogo, which took a frightening turn when the vehicle carrying them crashed.
According to Sarkodie, the car collided head-on with another vehicle before veering off the road into a nearby bush. Amakye Dede was seated in the front passenger seat, while Sarkodie travelled in the back alongside the driver and his cameraman. Although the musicians were moving in a convoy, the other vehicles were some distance behind when the crash occurred, leaving the four occupants to deal with the immediate aftermath.
As bystanders gathered around the damaged vehicle, Sarkodie said a woman who had alighted from a bus approached him, not to ask whether he was hurt, but to request a photograph with him. “People saw the accident, but they didn’t know it was us. One girl came down from the bus and said to me, ‘Where else will I meet you again? Let me take a selfie with you.’ She didn’t ask how I was doing,” he recalled.
Sarkodie said the woman appeared not to have considered whether he had sustained injuries in the crash, focusing instead on the opportunity to take a photograph with him. “That’s why I am saying they don’t see a human; they see Sarkodie. She had not even realised that I was hurt; that is not what was important to her,” he added.
The encounter, he explained, highlighted how celebrity status can sometimes overshadow the person behind the public image, with fans becoming more concerned about getting close to a famous figure than recognising what that person may be experiencing. This incident has sparked a conversation about the relationship between celebrities and their fans.
Sarkodie shared the experience in a social media video, allowing his followers to gain insight into the challenges that come with being a public figure. His story has generated significant interest and discussion online, with many people reflecting on the implications of his encounter with the fan.
The accident and subsequent fan encounter have brought attention to the lives of Sarkodie and Amakye Dede, two prominent figures in Ghana's music industry. Their experience serves as a reminder of the complexities of fame and the importance of empathy and understanding in interactions between celebrities and their fans.
